AI/ML engineer with master's degree and three papers — NIW approved with no RFE

Mr. G. is a research-track engineer in AI/ML, working on core trading systems at a global financial institution while remaining academically active. On paper his profile was challenging for an NIW applicant: a master's degree from a state university (most NIW petitioners hold doctorates from top research institutions), three papers published in 2024 on preprint platforms and a regional IEEE conference, three different research directions (speech recognition, image generation via GANs, and knowledge graphs) with no obvious unifying theme, and a corporate engineering role that easily reads as "valuable to one employer."

We treated the case as cognitive design. The petition was built around an authority-anchored framework that gave the adjudicator the right reference system before evaluating the evidence. Citation data was placed against a third-party calibrated benchmark so the same numbers carried different signal. The three papers were re-extracted into a single methodological through-line that crossed the technical domains. The corporate work was reframed from "building trading systems for an employer" to "advancing the AI capability of U.S. financial infrastructure."
